Trail Report

A beautiful day in the woods after the wind settled down and sun out in full force. Cold temps keeping the melting at a minimum with high temp just above freezing. For late October, pretty nice skiing early this morning and late afternoon, mainly on Suicide Hill which has the best protection from sun and warm temps. Should manage another ski tomorrow morning before warming temps tomorrow melts most of the remaining snow. With calm conditions and very cold temps, should see some serious ice in the morning. Photos taken Monday, October 27th.

Trail Report

Sunday morning and early afternoon saw about 3-4″ of fresh snow fall on the Maplelag trails. The ground was not frozen so the snow melted a bit from underneath but still was enough snow for some skiing on Suicide Hill. Jake and I skied out to Suicide on double green and Sukkerbusk trails. The skiing was better than expected and a complete treat to be skiing so early in the year. A added bonus was the trumpeter swans on Bullhead lake that were making all kinds of noises. There were also about 500 ducks sitting on Bullhead lake. The snow will melt off by Tuesday but should be able to get another ski or two in before it is gone. Photos from Sunday late afternoon.

Trail Report

Sunday morning we woked up to almost blizzardlike conditions. A inch or so has fallen and has accumulated on the trails. Snow forecasted to fall off and on the rest of the day.  Might stick around for a few days with colder temps to follow this very strong cold front but should melt off by middle of the week with very warm ground underneath. Either way, it is exciting to see white and a reminder winter is not too far away.  Photos below taken Sunday morning.

Concordia Language Villages

We feel very fortunate to be the host of El Lago del Basque,
one of Concordia College’s Spanish Language Villages, for eleven weeks
in the summer. It is exciting to be part of an atmosphere where students
are totally immersed in the culture of the various Spanish-speaking countries. In the Summer of 2008, we hosted Portuguese for two weeks of the summer and will do so again for 2009.
If you have been to Maplelag with your children or grandchildren, then
this would be a great place to send a first time camper. They will have
the advantage of being in familiar surroundings where they will have the
Richards families near by. And, once they have been here, don’t be surprised
if they want to come back again the next year!

about any of the various language villages, call 1-800-222-4750.

Full Moon

Grooming under the moonlight, December Full moon 2007

Keep in mind there is usually a week or so before the full moon that can be counted on for good moonlight skiing. Some of the most interesting moonlight skiing is after the full moon date has passed and the moon has the best light around 4 or 5am. Skiing in moonlight then skiing into a sunrise is a great experience.
