Bike Trail

Mountain Bike Trail Report

Trails are open. We cleared on about 20 miles of the LagChilada loop Thursday and Friday except North Loup Gnar and first part of twin lakes original singletrack. Leaf drop is occurring so the deck is getting covered again but the main layer of leaves are off and a great day to ride!

Fall colors just past their peak and a beautiful time of year to ride. Nice job to the riders completing the LagChilada challenge this month….just another month or so remaining in the dirt season…keep the wheels moving!

A great day Sunday 9/6 for the 36th Laddies Loppet mountain bike race! Thanks everyone that came to race and all that helped make it another special day. (few photos from the race below) Dry, dusty and fast conditions on race day. 

This summer we hosted a four day MTB camp with local HS team “Wolves” based out of Moorhead/Detroit Lakes/Perham area. 45 riders with many first year riders on the trail….awesome to see! Also over 30 riders completed the “LagChilada” challenge Saturday…good job everyone! If you are part of a team in the MCA and interested in holding a camp at Maplelag, please reach out to Jay at 218-849-7669.

Maplelag trails can be described as as “old school” or classic style mountain biking.

For first time riders to Maplelag, a good beginner loop is the Citizen loop and Sukkerwest at the end of the driveway. A intermediate to advance loop is the Sport Comp Expert loop. The entire 25 LagChilada loop is open and all the LagChilada signs are out. Click here for more about the challenge!

Hiking and Ski Trail Report

Another beautiful fall day with summer like temps!. Dry conditions with welcomed sunshine after a wet start to the month. Fall colors around Maplelag spectacular right now. We are past our “peak” but still beautiful Autumn scenes as the oaks, poplar, birch and remaining maples still providing fantastic color.  First frost of the year last week which always gets us excited for the next season to come as we fully appreciate the one now!

We have been leaf clearing on the trails when possible, preparing for the upcoming winter season. We try to have the trails completely clear of leaves before frost and snow arrives so we can open for winter activities on minimal snow. 

Total rainfall in September at 5.5″. We are at 20.45″ of rain since April 1st. Normal rainfall for the year is around 30″.

Great time of the year to be mountain biking, hiking and walking on the trails to experience the Fall magic.  

Trails are open for hiking/trail running and mountain biking with day pass or a membership. 

Recommended hiking loops include Sukkerbusk, JibFly and Skaters Waltz on the inner trails and Twin Lakes ski trail for west side. Bike course singletrack loops also open for hiking. Be aware there might be riders on the course. The bike courses have tape but if hiking, just go under the tape.

Thank you to everyone that comes to Maplelag and supports the trails. A MN State trail pass is not required to use the trails at Maplelag. The Maplelag trails are self funded by operations with no grants or state funding.  Consider a Maplelag Membership to support the trails!

Great day on Saturday for the “WanderFest” hiking event. Nice job to all the participants that completed the courses of 5, 10 and 20 miles! Each distance was one lap utilizing both singletrack and ski trail.

Trails are open. We cleared most of the longer singletrack segments including the full starter loop yesterday. Today we will be clearing on Bullhead Bootleg and Twin Lakes Race loop.

Mountain Bike Trail Report

Trails are open. Great weekend of riding with dry weather and brilliant sunshine. Fall riding conditions. Leaves are falling fast right now and covering the trails. We have been blowing out trail but quickly covering up. Best bet for riding after Friday leaf clearing is on Bullhead Bootleg and Hudson’s Hula. We plan to clear much of the trail again on Thursday and Friday for weekend riding.
