Mid winterlike conditions to start the week. Snow falling this morning and as of 9am, around an inch of new accumulation. Looking at the various models and forecasts, anywhere from 4-20″ possible by Wednesday morning. At this point the snow amount totals look to be highest just to the northwest of us. Cold weather expected to follow for a few days after…..January skiing in March!! Looking at the long range forecasts and considering we are nearing the end of the season, we will be focusing our grooming efforts on Sap Run, Mother Hen, Sukkerbusk, Bullhead, Twin lakes, North Loup, Skaters Waltz and a couple other inner trails like Lucky’s Loype and JibFly. If there are requests for certain trails to be groomed, let us know and we will try to groom those trails! We plan on grooming at least Skaters Waltz and North Loup until the snow is gone. Last year the last day we skied was May 1st with the last grooming day on April 29th!!
A beautiful day for the Lotvola Cup. After a morning low in the single digits, temp climbed nicely to the upper teens. Light winds, clear skies and intense March sun made for a gorgeous day. Multiple grooming passes conditioned the snow after warm weather and rain Thursday night. The trails were fast but controllable. Thanks to everyone who came out for the race. Looks like another week of midwinter weather with cool temps and chances of snow. Grooming will continue this week as needed. More photos and results on skinnyski.com
Another beautiful springlike skiing conditions day. A shot of rain last night was a bit scary after no snow afterward but multiple grooming passes and clouds giving way to sunshine around lunch time making for some nice skiing on the trails groomed. Trails not groomed were a bit icy but still skiable. The high temp was at 6am when the thermometer registered 32 degrees but since then, the temp has fallen to 18 degrees locally as of 6:30pm. Grooming this morning on Sap Run, Mother Hen, Sukkerbusk, Skaters Waltz, Wavy Gravy, Lucky’s Loype, JibFly, Loon Return and a new track set on North Loup. The trails used for the Lotvola Cup are in good shape after multiple grooming passes and final grooming will occur early Saturday morning on all the trails for the course. Expect fast conditions unless new snow falls after grooming. Either way, should be a great day!!
Great springlike skiing today. Fast and dry in the morning, softer and slow most of the afternoon, then cooling down and tracks glazing up late afternoon. No wax skis were working best and folks waxing were using klister. Don’t go run and hide, there can be some great skiing with klister!! Sap Run, Mother Hen, Sukkerbusk, Twin Lakes and JibFly groomed this morning. Trails groomed up very nice and skiing was great. Checked out part of the Lotvola Cup course late afternoon and coverage is excellent. Select trails will be groomed tomorrow and cooler temps forecasted should make for some faster skiing unless it warms up enough to soften the snow again. Either way there is a good base of snow and proper adjustments with the wax or skis will make for some nice skiing.
A marvelous March day. Skiing in March can be some of the best of the year. Days are long, sunshine is intense on clear days and temps are generally moderate. And if a good base of snow exists like it does on the trails now, skiing is very nice. Mother North Star, Poki Loki, Sap Run, and Skaters Waltz groomed last night and skiing on these trails this morning was excellent. All the other trails are in great shape with the only issue a few leaves and forest matter in the tracks here and there from recent wind. The snow is holding out great today with the warmer temps and being in the woods on a day like today is about as good as it gets. Grooming in the morning on select trails most likely to condition the snow from today’s action and other trails might be fast early before softening up with warmer temps forecasted. Cooler weather to start the weekend with chances of snow. Grooming on the trails Friday and Saturday early morning should set the trails up for some great skiing on the weekend and things are looking good at this point for the Lotvola Cup on Saturday.
Today pretty much a repeat of yesterday. A handful of degrees warmer, cloudy, then clearing with another day of intense March sunshine. Wind kicking a few leaves around that have made their way to the tracks but all in all, fantastic conditions on the trails. Temp staying below melting and a check of the trails mid afternoon found dry and powdeyconditions. The streets in town might be slushy and sloppy but no salting or sanding on the Maplelag trails and the snow is white minus natural forest matter from the trees etc. Compacted base on trail ranges from 5-10″ and snow depth in the woods ranges from 1-2 feet. Should be a great first week of March on tap. Warmer temps later in the week with precipitation possible. Plenty of base to re condition if need be. Another cold front possibly moving through over the weekend!
